“What is the hurry,” he says. And at another time, “I started my political career in JD-S.” Then he falls back on his astrologers: “Till March 28 or so, time is not good for me. I’ll decide after that.”

While state Congress president R.V. Deshpande asserted Ambareesh would not leave the party, Kumaraswamy claimed after meeting Ambareesh that he would “return to us”. And BJP’s higher education minister Arvind Limbavali, who also met the star with offers, said Yeddyurappa had spoken to him.

While this confusion exsists. The BJP has announced candidates for 24 of the 28 seats in the two-phased elections in Karnataka on April 23 and 30; the Congress and JD-S are still finalising their nominees.

JD(S) will go hi-tech to woo urban voters / JDS – Election 2009 updates.

The JD(S) in the State, led by H D Kumarswamy, will soon shed its bucolic image and usher in information technology application in a big way to reach out to urban voters during the coming Lok Sabha election.

The party could be seen vying with its principal opponents — the BJP and the Congress — in online campaign by bombarding SMS, voice mails, e-mails and video clippings to target voters during electioneering in the coming days.

More importantly, the JD(S) will, for the first time, have an official website of its own — address of which is yet to be finalised. Sources said Kumaraswamy has decided to hire the service of an online election campaign service provider for this purpose. ElectionCampaigner, one of the leading online campaign service providers, recently gave a power point presentation to the former CM and other senior party leaders.

The online election campaign service provider will have experts who help political parties to reach, attract and influence voters, especially those in urban areas. Why does the JD(S) wants to adopt IT now? “Kumaraswamy believes that the party needs to change with the time and compete with rival parties in all respects. Moreover, the JD(S) is fighting the coming elections under the third front banner. So the party leaders want to reach out to urban voters also,” sources explained.

JD(S) senior leader C Narayanaswamy, who is co-ordinating with Kumaraswamy in this regard, said the party will have full-fledged and permanent IT infrastructure.

“Our efforts are not aimed at the forthcoming elections alone. If not computers, almost all farmers have cell phones. By using IT, we can reach them easily,” he pointed out.

Narayanaswamy is a tech-savvy leader and has his own website — cnarayanaswamy.com.
He was a member of parliamentary committee for computer when he was a member of parliament. However, the party patriarch H D Deve Gowda still does not approve of using IT in campaign, at least for his party. For, he is of the view that urban voters who have access to IT, do not vote for the JD(S). So is the reason the party does not have its official website at all.

In fact, one of the party functionaries had launched a website — www.janatadalsecular.com — in 2007.
But the party leadership neither accepted it as official website. As a result, the website became defunct.

Lingayats, who form one-fifth of Karnataka’s population, are in the forefront — be it wielding power or running institutions – Anil Kumar M | TNN

Power and Lingayats (Veerashaivas) in Karnataka are synonymous. Regardless of the political party in power, Lingayats — be it netas or babus — always are in proximity with power. If numbers are any indication, then Lingayats form one of the mostpowerful social groups in Karnataka. Seven of Karnataka’s 19 CMs are from this community. However, some religious and political leaders maintain this is a religion, not a c o m m u n i t y. Followers of the 1 2 t h – c e n t u r y social reformer Basavanna, they have strong presence in Tumkur, Chitradurga, Davanagere and the 10 North Karnataka districts. Worshippers of Shiva in the form of Linga, Kudalasangama in Bagalkot district is their pilgrim centre.

CMs apart, Lingayats have a lion’s share in the legislature. According to former minister V Somanna, every fourth MLA is a Lingayat — some 60 MLAs in the 224-member House — and more than 15 members in the council. Over 22% of the state’s population are Lingayat. Their numero uno position has come about not just because of their political dominance. Lingayats’ efforts to make Karnataka strong are many. Be it the freedom struggle, Karnataka unification movement, literary activities or setting up organized educational institutions, Veerashaivas have left inerasable imprint on all sectors.

A strong political foundation for Veerashaivas in the state was laid by S Nijalingappa. He is the only Kannadiga to have helmed the AICC. Successive CMs were also from the same community —- B D Jatti in 1958 and S R Kanti in 1962 before Nijalingappa returned for another term as CM from 1962-1968 with Veerendra Patil succeeding him. After Patil’s term ended in 1971, there was a long gap until S R Bommai emerged on the scene for a brief stint in 1988, followed by J H Patel and now B S Yeddyurappa.

Veerashaivas, who patronised Congress for a long time, distanced themselves after their leader Nijalingappa was neglected by the party. Though they came back to the Congress fold when Veerendra Patil was made KPCC president in the late 1980s, they snapped their ties after he was sacked as CM by Rajiv Gandhi.

Later, the community supported Janata Dal , which rewarded them by making Patel CM in 1996. With the disintegration of JD in 1999, most of the Veerashaiva leaders joined JD(U) and slowly embraced BJP. At a time when this community was frantically searching for a leader having pan-Karnataka image, they found one in Yeddyurappa and elected him CM.
more proof that BJP is a party of Lingayats? Of the 24 names announced for Lok Sabha race, nine are Veerashaiva.

PRIMARY LESSONS

Lingayats or Veerashaivas are followers of 12th-century social reformer Basavanna, worship Shiva in the form of Linga, and their pilgrim centre is Kudalasangama in Bagalkot district

They’ve strong presence in Tumkur, Chitradurga, Davanagere and the 10 North Karnataka districts

Seven of the 19 Karnataka CMs are from the community — S Nijalingappa, B D Jatti, S R Kanti, Veerendra Patil, S R Bommai, J H Patel, Yeddyurappa

Some 60 MLAs and 15 MLCs are from the Lingayat community in the legislature; the community forms 22% of the states’ population

Their contributions are many and varied: freedom struggle, Karnataka unification movement, literary activities and setting up organized educational institutions

Vokkaligas reaping rich poll harvest

Bangalore: Vokkaliga in Kannada means one who tills the land. This peasant community, popularly known as Gowdas, has been equally successful in shaping their political fortunes and reaping rich dividends.
For over five decades, starting from K Chengalaraya Reddy, the first CM of Karnataka, to former CM H D Kumaraswamy, the Vokkaligas of the old Mysore belt have exercised a dominant hold over Karnataka politics and, to some extent, in national politics as well.

Reason: the three main political parties — Janata Dal (S), Congress and BJP — have always vied for their favour as they are the second biggest caste block after Lingayats in the state.
In the national arena, the community was noticed when H D Deve Gowda sprang a surprise by becoming the Prime Minister of the United Front coalition government in 1996. Earlier, Kengal Hanumanthamaiah served as railway minister in 1971. Kannada actor-turned-politician M H Ambareesh served as Union minister of state for information and broadcasting in the UPA government besides S M Krishna, who was governor of Maharashtra.

Despite the fact that Vokkaligas chief ministers held sway in Karnataka politics after Independence with K C Reddy, Kengal Hanumanthaiah and Kadidal Manjappa at the helm until 1956, there was a vacuum up to 1994, thanks to the emergence of Lingayat and backward classes leaders including S Nijalingappa, Veerendra Patil, D Devaraj Urs among others.

In 1994, the landslide victory of the Janata Dal in the assembly elections robustly supported by the rare combination of Vokkaliga, Dalits and Muslims gave the party and the community leaders a new lease of life.
Calculations based on the voting pattern by Vokkaligas in the assembly elections in the state show that a majority of community voters prefer JD(S) to Congress. In Hassan and Mandya districts, the Vokkaliga heartland, out of 12 Vokkaliga MLAs, eight are from JD(S) and four from Congress. The BJP too attempted to carve out a base and has achieved some success.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, BJP is now making a determined bid to make inroads into the traditional vote bank of JD(S) and Congress in the old Mysore region. The Adichunchunagiri mutt, headed by Balagangadhara Swamiji, a powerful institution of the Vokkaligas, continues to hold sway over the community.

DIE IS CASTE

Karnataka has had six Vokkaliga CMs of the 19 so far
Seven others were Lingayats, four from Backward Classes and two Brahmins
Vokkaligas comprise 16% of Karnataka’s 5.5 crore population
Lingayats are slightly more at 18%
Vokkaligas are spread across South Karnataka districts — Bangalore, Kolar, Mandya, Mysore, Hassan and Chikmagalur

ROYAL BATTLE

Assembly polling statistics show a majority of Vokkaliga voters prefer the JD(S) to the Congress In the Vokkaliga heartland of Hassan and Mandya districts, of the 12 Vokkaliga MLAs, eight are from JD(S) and four from Congress The BJP, too, is trying to cut into the JD(S)-Congress votebank

The team

The Janata Dal (Secular) is a left of centre Indian political party led by former Prime Minister of India H.D. Deve Gowda. It was formed in July 1999 by the split of Janata Dal party. It has political presence mainly in Karnataka. In Kerala, a breakaway faction Janata Dal (Left) is a part of the LDF government.
Janata Dal was formed in Bangalore by the merger of the Janata Party with smaller opposition parties in 1988.In May 1996, H.D. Deve Gowda, now leader of Janata Dal (Secular), became Prime Minister of India as part of a coailition (called United Front) government.

Janata Dal split in 1999 when some leaders left to ally with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance and form the Janata Dal (United) party.[2] That party was led by George Fernandes while Deve Gowda emerged as the leader of the Janata Dal (Secular). Even though the premise for the split was its opposition to allying with the National Democratic Alliance, Deve Gowda stayed equally away from the Congress from the outset. [11] Gowda wanted the party to remain equidistant from both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress. In spite of its difference with the Janata Dal(United) on the issue of support to National Democratic Alliance, the two parties were united in their anti-Congress stance. [12] Gowda wanted the parties to merge in future but the Janata Dal(United) was not keen to ally with Gowda.

H.D. Deve Gowda is still the leader of the party and is a member of Lok Sabha for the Hassan district in Karnataka. His party is the third-largest in the Karnataka state legislature and for a time governed in a coalition with the Congress party (INC), the first coalition government in Karnataka. There was much controversy over the JD(S) allying with the INC in Bangalore as the INC formerly had an outright majority and was diminished to second place with the BJP having a plurality. The BJP saw the rise in seats for both BJP and JD(S) as being a sign that the voters did not want an INC state government and were very upset when the kingmaker JD(S) party decided to ally with the INC to gain a majority. However, the JD(S) considered INC to be the lesser of the two evils on account of its erstwhile secular and centre-left credentials.
